Milk is a nutrient rich white liquid food produced by the mammary glands of mammals. It is basically the main source of nutrition for infant mammals before they are able to digest other types of food. As for humans, they consume milk of other mammals such as cows, goats and sheep. However, cow’s milk is considered the best wholesome supplement for children as well as adults.

Milk is highly nutritious. It is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, thiamine, Vitamins D and B12. It is also a high source of protein which aids the body in growth and development, cell repair and immune system regulation.

Irrespective of the high nutritious value of milk, many can’t take milk because they are unable to digest lactose which is found in milk. Nevertheless, to those without this health condition, below are benefits derived from milk consumption.

Cow’s milk is a rich source of high quality protein containing all of the essential amino acids. Whole milk is also a rich source of energy in the form of saturated fat which can prevent muscle mass being used for energy. Maintaining a healthy amount of muscle is important for supporting metabolism and contributing to weight loss and weight maintenance.

Milk is good for the bones as it offers a rich source of calcium and vitamin D. These nutrients help prevent osteoporosis which happens when the bone density decreases and the body stops producing much bone as it did before. Calcium also help protect the body from other ailments such as arthritic conditions, migraine headaches, pre – menstrual syndrome and obesity in children.

Vitamin D which is found in milk helps in cell growth regulation and cancer prevention, especially colorectal cancer.

Cow’s milk is a good source of potassium which can enhance vasodilation and reduce blood pressure, increases blood flow to vital organs and reduces stress on the heart and cardiovascular system.

Milk contains a good amount of water molecules and therefore it helps keep the body hydrated. It’s fat content also prevents the body from getting dry. While most may decide to neglect drinking water, they can choose to always take milk to stay hydrated.

6. Prevents depression:

Adequate vitamin D level supports the production of serotonin, a hormone associated with mood, appetite and sleep. Deficiency of vitamin D has been associated with depression and chronic fatigue.
