Health Benefits of Ewedu

Corchorus olitorius, popularly known as ewedu or jute leaves is a flowering plant belonging to the Malvaceae family. It is used to make a traditional soup here in Nigeria mostly eaten by the Yoruba people. It is rich in minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Some of which include calcium, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamins A, C, E, riboflavin, niacin and folate. It provides the body with certain health benefits among which includes:

1. Contains antioxidants:

Ewedu contains antioxidants that help protect the cells from the activities of free radicals, thereby warding off several diseases in the body. Not only does ewedu contain antioxidant properties, it also contains antiinflammatory properties and can be helpful in treating inflammation.

2. Prevents cancer:

Due to the antioxidants and vitamins found in ewedu, it can help protect against the development of cancer cells and inhibit the growth of tumors. Research shows that ewedu may be helpful in preventing prostate, ovarian and cancer cells.

3. Improves digestion:

Ewedu is also rich in fiber which helps improve digestive health by preventing cases of constipation, bloating and other stomach related issues. It can also keep you feeling full for a long period of time and can therefore be beneficial for loosing weight.

4. Prevent osteoporosis:

Ewedu is a good source of calcium and phosphorus which helps in the development of bones and maintaining bone density. Consuming it therefore, can prevent osteoporosis which is bone loss.

5. Improves eye health:

Ewedu contains vitamin B6 and folate with other vitamins which are directly linked with improving eye health. Consuming it can therefore, prevent some eye diseases including Age-related Macular Degeneration.

6. Treats restless leg syndrome:

Ewedu is a good source of iron. The deficiency of which causes restless leg syndrome. Research shows that ewedu contains 2.75mg iron which is about 34.13%  of the daily recommended value. Regular consumption can therefore be helpful in treating this syndrome.

7. Promotes skin health:

Ewedu is a goof source of vitamin A which is essential for wound healing and cell growth. Vitamin A is important as it supports the skin cells both internally and externally. It also contains riboflavin which is important in maintaining collagen levels that make up for healthy skin.
