Educational Background
Katumba Wamala holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations and diplomacy from Nkumba University and a Masters degree in strategic leadership from the United States Army War College.
He attended the Uganda Military Academy, Tanzania Military Academy, a military academy in the Soviet Union, Nigerian Command and Staff College, United States Army Command and General Staff College, and United States Army War College.
Career
Katumba Wamala was an army officer with the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) but he joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1986 after UNLA was defeated by NRA.
Katumba Wamala commanded the UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 2000 and 2001.
He was appointed the Inpector General of Police (IGP) in 2001. He served in that capacity till 2005.
Katumba Wamala was promoted from the rank of a Major General to the rank of a Lieutenant General. He was also given the title of commander of land forces, making him one of the most senior army officers in Uganda.
In 2013, Wamala commanded the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) in a peace-keeping mission in Somalia.
He was promoted to the rank of four-star general and appointed chief of defence forces in May 2013.

Katumba Wamala is married with children. He is a christian.
Assassination Attempt
On June 1 2021, Katumba Wamala was attacked by unknown gunmen while traveling in a convoy near his home town. He suffered gunshot wounds but however his daughter and the driver was killed.
