Educational Background
Edgar Lungu obtained an LL.B. from the University of Zambia in 1981.
Career
After graduation from school, Lungu joined Andrea Masiye and Company in Lusaka. He further underwent military officer training at Miltez in Kabwe under Zambia National Service (ZNS).
In 2010, Edgar Lungu’s law license was suspended by the Law Association of Zambia for professional misconduct.
In 2011, Edgar Lungu was appointed a Junior Minister in the Vice-President’s office after Patriotic Front (PF) won the 2011 general election. He was later appointed the Minister for Home Affairs in 2012.
In December 2013, Edgar Lungu was appointed the Minister for Defence after Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba resigned.

While serving as Defence minister, Lungu held several positions for the political party Patriotic Front (PF). Some of the positions were Chair of the Central Committee on Discipline, Secretary General and many others.
He was the Minister of Justice on 28 August 2014 to replace Wynter Kabimba, who was fired.
Edgar Lungu served as the Acting President during President Michael Sata’s long-term illness in 2013 and 2014. After President Sata died, Vice-President Dr. Guy Scott took over as Acting President in 2014.
In November 2014, he was elected the national president of Patriotic Front at the national convention of the party held in Kabwe, Zambia.
Edgar Lungu contested in the presidential bye election held on 20 January 2015. He narrowly defeated Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development. He was declared winner of the presidential election on 24th January, 2015.
Lungu appointed Inonge Wina as the first female Vice-President of Zambia.
In August 2016, Edgar Lungu contested for the Zambian presidential election. Lungu defeated his closest rival UPND candidate Hakainde Hichilema.
UPND candidate Hakainde Hichilemafiled a case against Lungu at the Constitutional Court requesting the nullification of the election results. The court dismissed the case on 5 September 2016 and Lungu was inaugurated for a full five-year term of office on 13 September.

Edgar Lungu Health issues
In 2015, Edgar Lungu collapsed while holding a speech commemorating International Women’s Day in Lusaka. After spending a short while in a Zambian hospital he had an operation for his narrowed oesophagus in Pretoria, South Africa.
In June 2021, President Edgar Lungu collapsed in the capital, Lusaka, during a national defence day event on Sunday, local media reported.

Edgar Lungu got married to his wife Esther Lungu in 1986. Their marriage is blessed with six children. One of his daughter Tasila Lungu is a councilor in chawama constituency.
