|Senator Bassey Albert Akpan is a Nigerian politician, banker and lawmaker. He was elected to represent Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District in 2015. Senator Bassey Akpan was born on 28 October 1972 to Chief Albert Robert Akpan.
Educational Background
Bassey Akpan attended St Patrick’s College, Calabar. He obtained a degree in Economics from the University of Uyo and a masters degree in business administration (MBA) from the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Career
Bassey Akpan started his career with United Bank for Africa (UBA) where he worked in the International Operations and Consumer Banking/Retail Banking Unit from 1997.
In 1999, he became the Manager, Corporate Banking group at the Continental Trust Bank and later the Uyo Branch Manager of First Inland Bank Plc in 2003.
In 2005, Bassey Akpan was the Assistant Vice President of the First City Monument Bank and worked as the General Manager in charge of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
Bassey Akpan joined politics in 2007 and was appointed the Commissioner of Finance to the Akwa Ibom state Government by Governor Akpabio.
Bassey Akpan was the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee whose job was to ensure that government projects were completed using direct labour to save funds for the state.
In 2014, Bassey Akpan picked nomination form to run for senate under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He won the election to represent Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial Zone in the Nigerian Senate.
Bassey Akpan was the Chairman of the Senate committee on Gas Resources
He was elected for a second term in office in 2019 under the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

Corruption Allegations
Bassey Akpan was arrested and detained by the Economic and Financials Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly receiving cars as a bribe from Jide Omokore years beforehand while Akpan was Akwa Ibom Finance Commissioner and Chairman of the State Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee
In August 2018, the EFCC filed charges against Bassey Akpan for bribery and corruption.
The Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP) accused Bassey Akpan of False Asset Declaration.
In August 2021, Akpan was accused of facilitating the bribery of federal legislators to guarantee the legislation’s advancement despite significant public opposition to parts of the text.
