Sarki Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi, His Majesty, was the first-class traditional ruler (Emir) of Dutse, the capital city of Jigawa State in the North Western part of Nigeria. He was also the Chancellor of Sokoto State University.

An exemplary thought leader in the pursuit of a sustainable living environment, Emir Sanusi was a lead advocate for afforestation and the green ecosystem in his expansive traditional domain.

He was born on 27 December 1944 into a highly disciplinarian family in Yargaba village in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.

Nuhu Muhammad-Sanusi attended Dutse Elementary School from 1952 to 1956. After his Primary Education, he obtained a National Certificate in Education from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and later a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in International Business from Ohio University, United States of America in 1972 and 1974 respectively.

He further obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Analysis from Bradford University, United Kingdom in 1977, in addition to an honorary Doctorate from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State. The emir was awarded an honorary Ph.D. in Management by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State.

Sarki Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi The third Dutse Emir. The late Emir was one of the five first-class emirs in Jigawa State. He served for 28 years as the Emir of Dutse. He was elected a member of Nigeria’s Constituent Assembly in 1989 and has been awarded the prestigious national honor of Commander of the Order of Niger.

His commitment to mitigating the effect of climate change prompted him to build the Dutse Royal Golf Course which is reputed to be one of the largest in Nigeria with lush vegetation, exotic flora, and rare sight. He also established several private schools for youths and adults and encouraged the community to seek knowledge as the main tool for development.

The Government of Sokoto State, in collaboration with the Council and Management of the Sokoto State University, picked him as Chancellor of the university. As chancellor, Dr. Sanusi brought a lot of tremendous development to the institution in academic and non-academic areas. And he used his vast experience and connections to move the university forward until his death.
