Aminu Dantata is a Nigerian businessman and philanthropist who is one of the promoters of Kano State Foundation, an endowment fund that supported educational initiatives and provided grants to small-scale entrepreneurs in Kano.

Aminu Dantata is the head of a group of companies that manages his real estate and other business, his father is a well-known businessman and this cleared the way for his sons, Aminu went on to join the family business called Alhassan Dantata & Sons Limited.

Aminu Dantata became the  Sokoto district manager of the business in 1955 and that was sadly the same year his father died. Consequently, the shares of the business were distributed to the children, and in 1958 he became the managing director of the business alongside his brother Ahmadu who was the managing director.

Aminu Dantata became and remained the Chairman and head of the business after the death of his brother in 1960. He was also involved in politics when he became a commissioner in the newly created Kano state in the late 1960s.

Established by his father as a commodity firm trading in groundnut, kola nut, and a few other commodities, Dantata later invested in some foreign enterprises operating in Nigeria. Between 1960 and 1980, it operated the following divisions: The building and construction division whose contracts included Defense Academy in Kaduna, the extension to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, and a civil aviation training school in Zaria.

The firm maintained a division that held a Mercedes Benz dealership and another that maintained a terminal at Warri Port. By the 1990s, the group had changed its identity to become Dantata Organization with additional investment in oil exploration through Express Petroleum.

In 1961, Dantata was elected as the representative of the Kura district in the Northern House of Assembly and was also an executive member of the Kano Provincial Council. After the First Republic, Dantata was nominated to be an executive member of the newly formed Kano State in 1967 where he served as the state commissioner of Trade and Industry.

Aminu Dantata was born in 1931 into the family of Alhassan Dantata and Amina Umma Zaria from Kano state, Nigeria. He is from an Agalawa trading family, Aminu Dantata’s grand-father was called Abdullahi while his great-grandfather was called Baba Talatin, a prosperous merchant who brought the family from Katsina to Madobi.

Following the death of his father Ali, Aminu Dantata’s grandfather Abdullahi continued to operate from Madobi until 1877, when having set out for a journey to Gonja his grandfathered Alhassan Dantata the father of Aminu at a campsite (Zango) of Bebeji on his return from the journey he decided to abandon Madobi and moved to Bebeji.

Aminu Dantata is the fifteenth child in a family of seventeen children and he is the only surviving Great Dantata. Aminu Dantata is married to four wives, he got married to his first wife in 1949 and he is blessed with numerous children.
