Akwashika Godiya began his political career in 2011 when he was elected into the Nasarawa State Assembly under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). During his first term (2011-2015), he served as the Majority Leader in the State Assembly.
In his second term (2015-2019), he was appointed the Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, a position he held until 2019 when he contested for and won the Nasarawa North senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-parliamentary Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Media and Public Affairs Committee. Akwashika Godiya was re-elected to the senate during the 2023 general election.
