Abubakar Sani Bello is a Nigerian politician who was born on December 17, 1967, in Niger State, Nigeria. He is the son of the former military Governor of old Kano state, Col. Sani Bello (RTD). Bello obtained a B.Sc in Economics from the University of Maiduguri in 1991.

Abubakar Sani Bello has worked in various organizations across the country and is currently a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Bello is the current executive Governor of Niger State, having been elected in 2015 and reelected in 2019.

Educational Background

Abubakar Sani Bello attended ST. Louis Primary School in Kano from 1974 to 1979 before proceeding to the Nigerian Military School from 1980 to 1985. He then gained admission to the University of Maiduguri in 1986, where he studied Economics and obtained a B.Sc in 1991.

Career

After his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, Bello worked in various organizations, starting from his time as a supervisor in the marketing department of NICOTES Services in Port Harcourt. He has since held positions in several other organizations, including the Nigerian Agip Oil Company, the National Economic Intelligence Committee, and his family’s businesses.

In 2015, Bello won the Niger State APC gubernatorial primaries and subsequently won the general election with a total of 593,709 votes. He was re-elected as the Governor of Niger State in 2019. In August 2020, he endorsed a Reconciliation Committee and other committees at a State Executive Committee meeting, together with members of the National Assembly from the State led by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and other Party Chieftains.

Controversies

Sani Bello Abubakar was discovered to have secretly carted away Nigeria assets to offshore tax havens, including the British Virgin Islands, based on the analysis of over 11 million Mossack Fonseca documents known as the Panama Papers.

The investigation uncovered at least two offshore companies associated with the governor, including one that was used to purchase a property in Harvey Lodge, London. One of the companies, Best International Holding Limited, was established in 1999 with a share capital of $50,000 in the British Virgin Islands, and the governor and his son, Shehu Bello, are listed as directors of the company.
