Educational Background
Rigathi Gachagua attended Kabiruini Primary School from 1971 to 1977 and then went on to complete his O-levels and A-levels at Kianyaga High School. In 1985, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Literature in 1988. During his time at the university, Gachagua served as the leader of the Nyeri District University Students Association (NDUSA) and as the chairman of the Association of Literature Students.
Career
After graduating, Gachagua briefly worked at Kenya’s Ministry of Home Affairs & National Heritage before joining the Administration Police Institute in 1990. He served as a District Officer Cadet at the Office of President Daniel Arap Moi from 1991 to 1992. Subsequently, he held the position of District Officer in the Kakamega, Ng’arua, and Laikipia districts.
In 1999 and 2000, he pursued an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration at the Kenya School of Government. From 2001 to 2006, Gachagua worked as the Personal Assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta. Between 2007 and 2017, Gachagua focused on his business ventures. In 2017, he successfully contested the parliamentary seat for the Mathira constituency.
Controversies
Rigathi Gachagua has faced several controversies throughout his political career. In 2017, he clashed with Keriako Tobiko, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry, over the destruction of alleged illegal intakes in the Mt. Kenya region. Gachagua claimed that many of the intakes destroyed were legal and led to a water crisis for thousands of people.
Furthermore, Gachagua has been involved in court cases related to the alleged misappropriation of government funds. In July 2022, a Kenyan court ordered him to reimburse KSh. 202 million (US$1.7 million), ruling that the money was obtained through corrupt means. Additionally, in November 2022, he faced corruption charges in a $60 million case, but these charges were eventually dropped.

Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua is married to Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi, a retired banker who is now a pastor in Mathira. The couple met at a university event attended by President Moi at the University of Nairobi in 1985 and got married in 1989. They have two sons named Kevin and Keith.
