His legal career lasted from 1992, the year following his graduation from law school, until 1998, which marked the dawn of Nigeria’s new democracy. During this period, he worked with several law firms, including one he co-owned. Notably, between 1992 and 1994, he held the position of Deputy Scribe of the Nigerian Bar Association in Plateau State.

In 1998, Lalong shifted his focus to politics and temporarily left his legal practice. He joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and contested his native Shendam Constituency, successfully entering the Plateau State House of Assembly. His political career experienced a significant milestone in October 2000 when he became the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly. He held this position until 2006, following a political upheaval within the House. Notably, his seven-year tenure as the Speaker made him the longest-serving Speaker in the history of Plateau State.

During his time as Speaker, Lalong’s influence extended beyond Plateau State. He was elected as the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of the 36 states of Nigeria for two terms, from 2001 to 2002.

In 2015, as the end of the second tenure of the serving governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, approached, Lalong contested the governorship on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He won the election and was sworn in as the Governor of Plateau State on May 29, 2015. He continued in this role until May 29, 2023.

Simon Bako Lalong’s political career saw further success when he won re-election as the Governor of Plateau State in the March 9, 2019 Plateau gubernatorial election and the March 23, 2019 Plateau State supplementary Gubernatorial Election. He secured victory with 595,582 votes against his rival from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), General Jeremiah Husseini, who garnered 546,813 votes. He was re-elected for his second term as the Governor of Plateau State on May 29, 2019.

In the 2023 general election, Lalong contested for the seat of the Senate to represent Plateau South senatorial zone in the National Assembly. However, he lost the election to Napoleon Bali, who won under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party. Despite this setback, he was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a minister representing Plateau State on August 2, 2023.
