DCP Abba Kyari joined Police Academy Wudil, Kano State and graduated in 2000 as a cadet Assistance Superintendent of Police (ASP).

He was attached to the Song Police Division of the the Adamawa State Police Command before he was later redeployed as a Unit Commander and Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) in Numan, Adamawa State and 14 PMF Yola respectively.
DCP Abba Kyari was transferred to Lagos State Police Command as a 2 IC and later as a commander in charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Controversies
Involvement with Hushpuppi
In 2021, Hushpuppi implicated DCP Abba Kyari in an international scheme to defraud Qatari school founder and then launder over $1.1 million in illicit proceeds.
The United States Department of Justice has issued a warrant of arrest and has ordered Kyari’s extradition.
In August 2021, the Inspector General of Police suspended DCP Abba Kyari pending the outcome of the investigation of his involvement with Hushpuppi’s fraud scheme.

Cocaine Deal Allegation
In February 2022, the Nigerian Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) released a video alleging DCP Abba Kyari’s involvement in drug trafficking.
In March 2022, the NDLEA arraigned Abba Kyari and 6 others on several charges bordering on conspiracy, obstruction and dealing in cocaine.
