Biafra Remembrance Day
|Biafra Remembrance Day is a day mapped out by the secessionist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in memory of heroes of Biafran Civil war between 1967 and 1970.
Date of Biafra Remembrance Day
On 30th May 1970, the Biafran soldiers surrendered to the Nigerian army and brought an end to the three years civil war. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) through their leader Nnamdi Kanu picked May 30th as the date for Biafra Remembrance Day.
In 2021, IPOB picked May 31st instead of May 30th to mark the Biafra Remembrance Day.
Origin of Biafra Remembrance Day
In May 2019, the Leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu announced a sit at home order on 30th May 2019 to mark Biafra Remembrance Day.
Though the Nigerian government kicked against the sit at home, the Biafra Remembrance Day is observed in the South Eastern part of Nigeria and some states in the South South region.
